Cowley Women's Tennis Wins Region 6 Championship

PRATT, Kan. – With individual champions at four of the six contested singles championships, along with two of three doubles champions, the Cowley College women’s tennis team won the 2026 NJCAA Region 6 Women’s Tennis Championship at the Walter Blake Tennis Complex in Pratt, Kansas April 21 and 22.
The six individual champions between singles and doubles play allowed the Tigers to secure 13.5 points and nearly double what finished as a tie for second in the team standings after both Barton and host Pratt finished with seven team points. Seward County earned four team points to place fourth, having the number one singles champion and the number three doubles region runner-up.
Individual singles champions for Cowley included Cynthia Wanjala at number two singles, Chiho Takada at number four singles, Lisa Takamura at number five singles, and Kendra Arsotegui at number six singles, while also seeing Wanjala and Naghely Garcia Galian win the number one doubles title and Takada and Takamura win the number three doubles title.
Pratt’s seven team points came from the number two doubles champions as Ebonie Russell and Emma Guzman paired up for the lone championship earned by the Beavers, while seeing Barbara Mattar and Alyse Zimmerman finish as Region 6 runners-up at number three doubles. Both Mattar and Zimmerman also earned a point each for PCC at number five and number six singles as Region 6 runners-up, with Ilse Smaalders (number three singles) and Sandra Rodriguez Dominguez (number four singles) also finishing as Region 6 runners-up.
Barton picked up one individual Region 6 champion as Mazamesso Tchamoussa won the number three singles title, while seeing teammate Danira Gabriel Ndengoue Kenmeni (number one singles) earn a runner-up finish, and the Cougars doubles team of Jamie Petrova and Tchamoussa combined for a Region 6 runner-up finish at number two doubles. Seward’s lone Region 6 Championship came courtesy of Mishel Lobotenko at number one singles, while also seeing Paula Elena Oborocea (number two singles) and Rosaline Akombo (number three singles) each earn third-place finishes in singles play.
As Region 6 team champion, Cowley College has earned an automatic berth into the 2026 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Tennis Championships May 2-6 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina. Barton and Pratt have also earned bids to the National Championship tournament and will compete alongside the Tigers in the National Tournament next month.
