Cowley Women's Tennis Finishes As NJCAA D1 National Runners-Up, 4 Individuals Earn All-America Honors

TYLER, Texas – Led by the 2025 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Tennis individual National Champion at number one singles, the Cowley College women’s tennis team finished the 2025 season as NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Tennis National Runners-Up while accounting for three of the four Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference women’s tennis players to earn All-America status.
The tournament, which took place at the Joann Medlock Murphy Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas May 3-7, saw the Tigers make another run at a National Title following last season’s National Championship before coming up short to Hillsborough Community College who won their second National Title in the past three seasons. HCC finished the tournament with 52 points after earning four of the six individual national titles in singles play and all three national titles in doubles play to edge out Cowley who finished with 39 total points while host Tyler Junior College took third with 35 total points. Also representing the KJCCC in the 28-team field was Seward County (eighth place, 22 points), Barton Community College (19th, 9.5 points), and Pratt (21st, 9 points) after seeing all four KJCCC schools earn berths into the National Tournament.
Highlighting the week’s individual results was a National Championship performance at number one singles by Cowley’s Serena Pereyra, who won her first match 6-0, 6-0 before picking up a quarterfinal round win by scores of 6-0, 6-4 against KJCCC foe Emma Petton (Seward County). In the semifinal round against number three seed Candy Wai of Tyler Junior College, Pereyra overcame a 7-5 opening set defeat to win the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the finals against Hillsborough’s Catherine Goldman where she earned a 6-1, 7-6 victory to claim an individual National Title and first-team All-America honors.
Also earning NJCAA All-America honors throughout the week for Cowley was Cynthia Wanjala and Naghely Garcia as the duo teamed up to advance to the National Title match against Johanna Marten and Noah Rojas (Hillsborough CC) where they fell 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 in the title match to earn Second-Team All-America accolades. Both Wanjala and Garcia also claimed Second-Team All-America honors in singles play with Wanjala advancing to the National Title match at number three singles before being dealt a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Hillsborough’s Aisulu Zholbolat while seeing Garcia advance to the number four singles National Title match before falling 6-4, 6-2 to Noah Rojas (Hillsborough CC). The KJCCC also had a representative in the number five singles National Championship match after seeing Seward County’s Alejandra Ramirez earn three straight-set victories to advance to the National Championship match before falling 6-0, 6-0 to Younsoo Cho of Hillsborough.
