Johnson County Women's Soccer Secures NJCAA Region 6/9 D2 Tournament Championship With 3-0 Win
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – With a 3-0 win over number three seed Neosho County, the number one-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team continued its historic run by claiming its third consecutive NJCAA Region 6/9 Division 2 Tournament Championship on Saturday, November 1st.
The Cavaliers remained perfect with the win, improving to 20-0-0 and setting new program records for both consecutive wins and total victories in a single season.
Freshman defender Leonie Widmann opened the scoring in the 21st minute off a pinpoint cross from sophomore midfielder Brecken Hoy, with the assist tying Hoy for the NJCAA Division 2 women’s soccer national lead with 20 this season.
The match remained tightly contested until the 82nd minute when sophomore forward Jill Lenherr broke free off a pass from sophomore forward Riggs Kuhn to double JCCC's advantage. Just five minutes later, sophomore forward Samantha Pond threaded a perfect pass through the defense to freshman Darby Howard, who sprinted past the back line and slotted home the final goal to secure the 3-0 victory.
With the Region 6/9 crown in hand, Johnson County advances to the NJCAA D-2 North Plains District Championship match, where the Cavaliers will face Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday, November 7, in Spencer, Iowa. Iowa Lakes advanced to the North Plains District Title match with a 2-0 win over Northeast Community College last Saturday as the winner will earn an automatic berth in the NJCAA D-2 National Tournament, which is scheduled for November 16-22 in Wichita, Kansas.
