PRATT, Kan. – Qualifying a wrestler for the 2026 NJCAA Wrestling National Tournament in all 10 weight classes and scoring a total of 171.0 points, the Cowley College wrestling team has won its first NJCAA South Central District Tournament Title in program history by beating out 11 other teams from NJCAA Region 2 and Region 6 inside the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena on the campus of Pratt Community College on Saturday, February 14th.
Behind four District Champions and a fifth wrestler finishing as District Runner-Up, the Tigers edged out District Runner-Up Northeast Oklahoma A&M, who totaled 166.0 points and were over 20 points ahead of third-place Carl Albert State College, who finished with 150.5 points. Coming in fourth was host Pratt Community College with 140.5 points, ahead of fifth-place Labette (90.5 points) and sixth-place Cloud County (86.5 points), while Fort Hays Tech Northwest (eighth, 66.5 points), Barton (ninth, 61.5 points), Colby (10th, 54.0 points), and Neosho County (11th, 35 points) also represented the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference at the meet.
Following the meet, Cowley College head coach Justice Circle was named District Coach of the Year while Labette’s Kyler Tabor (149 pounds) was named NJCAA South Central District Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler after going 3-0 in his weight class and never wrestling past the opening period with a technical fall over Kaiden Cue of Carl Albert State and falls against Kade Carter (Murray State), and Zach Dawson (NEO A&M).
For the Tigers, District Champions came by way of Colt Collett (125 pounds), Evan Rodriguez (141 pounds), Jaxon Trotter (174 pounds), and David Sample (184 pounds), while Greyson Zellers (157 pounds) was the district runner-up to Pratt’s Jacob Goodwin. The Beavers also had Preston Hagel (197 pounds) win a district title, while Labette’s Tabor gave the KJCCC district champions in six of the 10 weight classes.
Of the 80 wrestlers from the district that qualified for the 2026 NJCAA Wrestling Championships, the KJCCC had 51 wrestlers from eight different institutions qualify by either finishing in the top seven of their respective weight class or earning one of nine wild card selections to next month’s championships. Following Cowley’s 10 qualified wrestlers, Pratt had the next most qualified wrestlers from the KJCCC, with eight, while Labette and Cloud County both qualified seven of their 10 wrestlers who competed in the district tournament. Fort Hays Tech Northwest, Barton, and Colby all had five wrestlers qualify for the 2026 NJCAA Wrestling Championships, while Neosho County will be represented by four wrestlers after entering eight at the district tournament.
The 2026 NJCAA Wrestling Championships are set to take place March 6th and 7th inside the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as qualified wrestlers from all eight districts with hopes for NJCAA Individual and Team National Titles. Last year, Fort Hays Tech Northwest was the highest finishing team from the KJCCC by taking fourth, while the conference had National Champions in four of the 10 weight classes.
