Dodge City Women's Golf Team, Garden City's Rodriguez, Barton's Orozco Qualify For 2026 NJCAA Championships
GOODLAND, Kan. – Led by individual medalist Fernanda Rodriguez of Garden City, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference saw the Dodge City Community College women’s golf team, along with two individuals, qualify for the 2026 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf National Championship meet following the conclusion of the 2026 NJCAA D1 Women’s Golf Plains District Tournament held at Sugar Hills Golf Club in Goodland, Kansas.
The 36-hole meet, which took place April 27-28, featured eight total teams compete as the four KJCCC schools (Barton, Coffeyville, Dodge City, and Garden City) were joined by NJCAA Region 9 schools Central Wyoming College, Eastern Wyoming College, Northeastern Junior College, and North Platte Community College as all teams were vying for one of two automatic berths into the NJCAA National Tournament.
Dodge City led the team scoring after day one with a team total of 341 (+57) to sit one stroke ahead of Garden City and six strokes ahead of Eastern Wyoming College. In final day action on the 5,978-yard, par-71 course, Eastern Wyoming shot the low team round of the tournament with a total of 319 (+35) to overcome the deficit and overcome both Dodge City and Garden City to claim District Title honors after having five golfers finish in the top 15 of the final individual standings. Despite dropping out of first with a final round score of 330 (+46), the Conquistadors were able to hold off Garden City by four strokes to claim the other automatic team berth into the National Championship meet, finishing with a two-day total of 671 and five shots back of Eastern Wyoming.
Garden City’s final round total of 333 allowed the Broncbusters to finish one stroke ahead of fourth-place Barton as the Cougars followed an opening round 348 (+64) with a final round 328 (+44) to finish with a total of 676, while GCCC put together scores of 342 (+58) and 343 (+49) to finish with a total of 675. Other team scores all came from NJCAA Region 9, with Central Wyoming (743), North Platte (856), and Northeastern JC (908) rounding out the team scoring.
Individually, Rodriguez shot the low round of the tournament on the opening day by putting together a round of six-over 77 with 13 pars and followed with a final round 81 (+10) that featured another nine pars to turn a one-shot lead over Dodge City’s Heewon Pak into a four-shot victory with a two-round total of 158. Dodge City also had the third-place finisher in Zhana Navato, who finished with rounds of 85 and 78 to shoot a 163, while Barton’s Suri Rocha Orozco took fourth with rounds of 84 and 80 for a total of 164. As the two highest individual finishers that were not part of automatic qualifying teams, both Rodriguez and Orozco will also compete in the 2026 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf National Championships.
Following the conclusion of the five NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf District Championships, the official field for the 2026 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf Championships will be announced, as five additional teams will be selected as wild card entries. Both Garden City and Barton are awaiting potential at-large berths into the tournament, which will be held May 11-14 at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois. The course has been home to PGA Tour events from 1975 through 1999 and is hosting the NJCAA National Championships for the first time in 2026.
