Opening Week Of KJCCC Conference Play Shakes Up NJCAA Rankings For League Teams
NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Week 3 Poll | NJCAA Division 2 Men’s Basketball Week 3 Poll
CHARLOTTE, NC – The first week of conference play for Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 men’s basketball teams has led to wholesale changes across the latest NJCAA Basketball rankings, with all five ranked teams in the week three polls holding different rankings from the week prior.
After seeing numerous road teams pick up wins on the opening night of conference play and two of the five ranked teams drop games to unranked foes last week, the KJCCC continues to show its depth throughout the league as one of the deepest conferences across the entire NJCAA landscape.
Looking at the NJCAA Division 2 rankings, Johnson County picked up another two spots and moved up to number three in this week’s poll as the Cavaliers improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season with home wins over Central Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College. JCCC started the season ranked number nine in the preseason poll and is the highest-ranked unbeaten NJCAA Division 2 team among the 10 unbeaten teams that are ranked this week, trailing only number one Kirkwood Community College and number two Parkland Community College who both have one loss each.
One of the biggest movers up the rankings in the new NJCAA Division 1 rankings, Barton Community College picked up two wins last week to begin KJCCC play by defeating Dodge City at home before outlasting Cloud County Community College in a road comeback win to improve to 7-1 overall and move up from number 17 up to number 11 in this week’s poll. Falling from number three down to number 15 in this week’s poll was Coffeyville Community College as the Red Ravens dropped their conference opener at home to Butler before bouncing back with a home win over Independence while Cowley College suffered a 13-spot drop in the polls down to number 23 after finishing the week with losses to Murray State College and Dodge City Community College. Picking up a road win at Hutchinson followed by a home win over Pratt to improve to 7-1 overall, Garden City is receiving votes for the first time this season after showing themselves as a potential KJCCC dark horse while averaging a league-best 106.3 points per contest.
Things do not slow down at all this week despite the holiday week for Thanksgiving in Division 1 action as KJCCC schools will be in action on Tuesday and Saturday to set up a 12-game slate across the D1 conference landscape. Also taking place this week is nine games across the league for KJCCC D2 schools highlighted by a top five matchup between number three Johnson County and number five Iowa Central on Saturday afternoon in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The lone KJCCC D1 game featuring two ranked teams squaring off also comes on Saturday as number 11 Barton will travel to number 15 Coffeyville for a 4 PM tip-off inside Nellis Hall.
