COLBY, Kan. – For the first time in program history, the Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team has completed an undefeated regular season by going a perfect 29-0 in the regular season to win the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 2 regular season title and earn the top seed in this week’s NJCAA Region 6 Division 2 Men’s Basketball Plains District Tournament.
Just a year removed from completing only their second unbeaten conference mark in program history, the Cavaliers took things a step further this year by putting together an unbeaten 17-0 mark in non-conference play in addition to an undefeated 12-0 record in KJCCC games. Ranked third in the final regular season NJCAA Division 2 top 25 poll, Johnson County outscored conference opponents by an average of 16.5 points per game and saw just one of their 12 conference games decided by single digits. Over the past two regular seasons, the Cavaliers hold a combined record of 56-3 while having won each of the past two KJCCC regular season titles.
Earning the number two seed in this year’s tournament after putting together a 7-5 mark in the KJCCC is Allen, as the Red Devils will carry a 16-11 mark into the postseason and begin their Region 6 Division 2 Plains District Tournament run at home on Tuesday night. Following Allen was a three-way tie for third, with Highland, Fort Scott, and Kansas City Kansas all finishing with a 6-6 mark in conference. Following the tiebreaker procedure that took place, Highland earned the number three seed, followed by Fort Scott earning the four seed and Kansas City Kansas earning the five seed.
Opening round games for the 2026 NJCAA Region 6 Division 2 Plains District Tournament will take place on Tuesday, March 3rd, with Allen hosting Labette in Iola at 8 PM, Highland hosting Neosho County in Highland at 7 PM, and Fort Scott hosting Kansas City Kansas in Fort Scott at 7 PM. Johnson County receives a bye into the semifinal round and will begin its postseason on Friday afternoon.
The three opening-round winners will join Johnson County and advance to the semifinal round, which is scheduled to take place inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse and Breidenthal Court on the campus of Kansas City Kansas Community College in Kansas City. Semifinal number one will feature regular-season champion Johnson County taking on the winner of Fort Scott and Kansas City Kansas at 3 PM on Friday afternoon, before seeing the second semifinal matchup between the winner of Allen and Labette and the winner of Highland and Neosho County face off in the final game of the day at 7:30 PM. Winners of the two semifinal round matchups will face off at 4 PM on Saturday, March 7th, with the winner receiving an automatic berth to the 2026 NJCAA Division 2 Men’s Basketball National Tournament, which is set for March 16-21 inside the Mary Miller Center on the campus of Danville Community College in Danville, IL.
