Coffeyville head coach Jeff Leiker was named the KJCCC's 2021 Coach of the Year after leading the Red Ravens to a co-regular season conference championship. Rushing for 1,000-plus yards this season, Hutchinson running back Anwar Lewis was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. Garden City defensive back Keylon Kennedy earn the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
COACH OF THE YEAR – Jeff Leiker, Coffeyville
It only took Jeff Leiker two years in his return to the Red Raven sideline to raise the perennial Jayhawk power Red Ravens back to title status.
Starting with a 17-10 upset victory over preseason No. 1 and defending national champion Hutchinson in Week 1, the Red Ravens reeled off reeled off five-straight wins to open the season and climb to as high as No. 6 in the NJCAA National Rankings.
Coffeyville's only regular-season setback was at Garden City on October 23, a 39-11 loss, but with a share of the KJCCC title on the line, the Red Ravels traveled to Independence and knocked off the No. 3 Pirates 19-9 to claim a share of the league's regular-season title.
Coffeyville takes a 6-2 overall record and a No. 11 national ranking into the CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl against Tyler Junior College on Saturday.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Anwar Lewis, RB, Hutchinson
Known as a big-play threat in his first season, Blue Dragon running back Anwar Lewis became a complete back in 2021 in leading Hutchinson to an 8-2 overall record, a No. 5 national ranking and a Jayhawk Conference postseason championship.
Lewis ran for a league-high 1,063 yards on 188 carries in 10 games for Hutchinson this season. His 106.3 yard-per-game average ranks fifth in the NJCAA and his 5.7 yards per carry ranks 22nd in the national. Lewis' 11 rushing touchdowns is eighth in the NJCAA
Lewis had an incredible four-game streak in the middle of the season with four-straight 100-yard games, including a career-high 210 yards vs. Fort Scott on September 25. Lewis averaged 167.2 yards per game over that four-game span. He also had a streak of seven string of seven-straight games with a rushing touchdown. Lewis had three rushing touchdowns in the KJCCC Championship game against Garden City on November 21 at Riverfront Stadium in Wichita.
Lewis also accounted for 53 receiving yards on nine receptions and averaged 35.6 yards per kickoff return with a long of 72 yards.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Keylon Kennedy, CB, Garden City
For the second-straight season, the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year didn't have eye-popping stats, but his effect on the game was very noticeable.
Garden City cornerback Keylon Kennedy had just one interception in his sophomore campaign for the Broncbusters, but opposing quarterbacks would hardly throw to his side of the field, thus cutting off half the field to defend.
For the season, Kennedy had 11 solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Kennedy also had four passes defended this season. He had a season-high four total tackles against Hutchinson on October 2.
Kennedy was also a force on special teams, getting a key blocked kick on a 15-6 come-from-behind victory over Highland on September 18.
Because of Kennedy's prowess in the secondary, Garden City's pass defense ranked 11th nationally, allowing 224.6 yards per game.
